2WIRE EYES BIGGER SLICE OF TECH AREA
The tech company known as 2Wire has signed a lease for more space at the Nevada City Tech  Center.

The business signed on for 4,000 square feet of additional space at the business center's first building. The company committed in January to the entire second floor of the building on Providence Mine Road. It plans to relocate May 11 from Grass Valley.

With the additional space, 2Wire will now fill 65 percent of the building. Several interested parties have been actively negotiating for the remainder of the ground floor space, said project developer Robert Upton of the San Rafael based Campus Property Group.

"This has exceeded our expectations," said Upton, who is planning for more buildings later in the year and said he will "build to suit" for companies in the technology industry.

San Jose-based 2Wire supplies broadband equipment to companies such as AT&T, and the Grass Valley division is responsible for research and design. The company estimates it will grow from 25 to 60 local employees at the new location.

Upton said because of the success renting out the first building, construction of condominium units will begin in June. Renderings of the second building are being performed and feature a 10,000 square foot "boutique office building"  that will house seven small local service businesses. Lawyers and accountants will have the opportunity to buy their space, Upton said.

When complete, the Nevada City Tech Center is set to comprise 210,000 square feet of office space on 45 acres of forested land with hiking trails, a bocce ball and basketball court and an outdoor picnic area.
